Büdelsdorf, August 2005. Full steam ahead: Since mid June, week for week up to 10 shops are refurbished in the new mobilcom look. Much to the delight of those who now have a new, shiny and friendly shop.
Originally 20 shops per month were planned but Stefan Timm, department head of shop development and project responsible person has turned up the pace: "Lots of our shop partners are keen to have the new outfit because, like us, they expect boosts in sales. That is why we are going full speed ahead and doubling our implementations in consensus with our shop fitter partner ARNO".
The reconstruction teams render a masterpiece in logistics and workmanship and the numbers speak for themselves: Approximately 70 employees at 18 suppliers are working flat out to supply ARNO with the necessary parts for the assembly of the new shop fittings: metal frameworks and wood constructions, glass and electrical components, monitors and computer hardware for the "aircraft carrier" and cash desks.
50 imaginary shops per month
To be able to increase the pace, ARNO has rented 1.200 square meters of extra production space. More than 20 people - assemblymen, contractors and IT specialists – are working on the final assembly. Per month, 50 fittings for shops are built.
ARNO consultant Oliver Boltz: "We produce more imaginary shops than planned to be able to react quickly and flexibly for short notice needs". Repeatedly original shop layouts are changed immediately before implementation. " In order to meet the original schedule we have to be able to deliver the additional fittings ".
It is no wonder that ARNO project manager Harald Hofherr and 2 of his colleagues have their work cut out just to keep the production wheels turning. The suppliers must also be imbedded into the logistics as well as the fitters in Stuttgart and the assembly teams who have to convert the mobilcom shops into the "new" look at the shortest notice. Not forgetting the craftsmen who have to remove the old furniture and flooring, lay electric cables, paint walls and put in new flooring.
More than a hundred
All in all the number of full time workers employed on the present mobilcom shop refurbishment tops the hundred mark. Not included are a dozen creative minds who were active in the preliminary stages, designers, modellers, engineers and software developers. "The software for the "aircraft carrier" is an ARNO proprietary development specifically for this appliance" notes Oliver Boltz.
Incidentally ARNO sourced internationally for many of its suppliers. This assured that the high standard specifications could be met. "High quality at a good prices – this is only affordable by using international suppliers". Nevertheless, more than 50 per cent of the parts are manufactured in Germany with a purchase volume of about two thirds of the total volume.
More than 250 mobilcom shops are at present market active and this number will increase to 260 by the end of October. Stefan Timm calculates " If we keep up this pace, then despite the year end business pause, the refurbishment of all shops will be completed at the latest by next spring". Something the shop partners will be glad to hear.
